Tribute to Legends & Heros: Dieter Wohlfahrt
Dieter Wohlfahrt was an escape helper and the first person to die at the Berlin Wall who was both a non-German citizen and a resident of West Berlin. He was born in Berlin on May 27th 1941, and died there on December 9th 1961, during an escape attempt. He and others cut a hole in a fence between the Berlin districts Staaken and Spandau to help the mother of an acquaintance to escape. However, the mother had betrayed their plans to the local authorities. Wohlfahrt and his companions were ambushed by East German border guards, who opened fire on the group. Struck in the heart by a bullet, he lay for an hour without medical attention before succumbing to his injuries.
Tribute to Legends & Heros: Brigitte Helm
Brigitte Helm was a German film actress from Berlin. She was born on March 17th 1908, in the Schöneberg district and died on June 11th 1996, in Ascona, Switzerland. She is best known for her leading role in the 1927 German silent film Metropolis, which was also her film debut.
Tribute to Legends & Heros: Fanny Lewald
Fanny Lewald was a German writer, journalist, and one of the most important early figures in the women’s movement. She was born on March 24th 1811, in Königsberg and died on August 5th 1889, in Dresden. In novels, essays, and travelogues, she critically examined the position of women, marriage, education, and societal constraints. Works such as „Jenny“ and „My Life Story“ made her a prominent voice of the liberal middle class in the 19th century. Lewald lived in Berlin for many years and was closely involved in the literary and political life of her time.
